of June 25, 2010, the Northeast Guard Mountain Weather Center's outdoor equipment was damaged by lightning.
The anemometer was one of weather station's gear that was taken down by the lightning. The anemometer, temperature
and humidity probe has been replaced and all of the weather equipment is operating again at 100 percent.

Black Bear's Are Active
Black bears are active on and near the Appalachian Trail. Campers are
encouraged to use bear-proof food canisters. Another option, though less
effective, is to hang all food bags, trash, and other items such as toothpaste,
deodorants, etc. at least 12 feet above ground and 8 feet from the nearest
tree trunk. Do not take food into your tent or leave food scraps on the ground.
Always cook and prepare food away from your sleeping area.
Report any aggressive bears, particularly if they approach your campsite
in the daytime, to the U.S. Forest Service at 706-745-6928.
Black Bears are active in other areas of the mountains as well. At the NEGAWX
location, peaches were ready for picking. Most the peaches were ripe with about
a dozen peaches left to continue to tree ripen. The next day, after the picking, the
peach tree was torn up by bears eating the remaining peaches. The bears are
searching for food. Corn fields are now experiencing bears eating their fill.
Remember, bears share our mountains with humans and it is best to realize bears
are out there and if they are suddenly alerted to your presence, they could attack.
Normally, bears will run from human presence but not always. Some humans and
bears have become too friendly with one another and that relationship always
creates a dangerous situation for people and bears too. People that feed bears
are signing a death warrant for bears they feed. Mama bears, with cubs, are
particularly dangerous and in all respects must be avoided.
